What is Renewable Energy?

/rɪˈnjuːəbəl ˈɛnədʒi/

Renewable energy comes from naturally replenishing sources — solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, tidal — that are not depleted when used, unlike fossil fuels which take millions of years to form.

Everyday Example

A solar panel on your roof converts sunlight into electricity without consuming the sun. A wind turbine uses moving air without reducing the wind available.

publicReal-World Application

In 2023 the UK generated over 50% of its electricity from renewable sources for the first time. Solar panel costs have fallen 99% since 1977, making renewables cheaper than new coal in most countries.

Did you know?

The first wind turbine generating electricity was built in 1887 in Scotland by James Blyth. Solar cells were invented in 1954 at Bell Labs.

Key Insight

The challenge with renewables is not generation cost — it is intermittency. The sun does not always shine and the wind does not always blow, requiring storage and grid solutions.
